Frequently Asked Questions
How can I authenticate a Keith Haring artwork?
The Keith Haring Studio, LLC provides an Examination service free of charge for authentication. Owners of works (drawings, paintings, prints, and sculptures- but not autographed ephemera or subway drawings) should print the two downloadable files below. The Authentication Instructions (1 page) and Examination Agreement form (4 pages) should be completed carefully and fully, and submitted via mail in hard-copy. Note: the Examination Agreement requires the owner to initial pages 2-4 following the completion and signature of the first page. Faxed or emailed Examination Agreements are not acceptable, only hard-copy.
Works must be unframed and 4” x 5’” color transparencies of the entire front and back of the work (even if blank), as well as a signature detail, must be submitted with the completed Examination Agreement document. An even 2-3 inch border is recommended around the work to show the edges of the work. The images must be evenly lit, clearly focused, and taken against a white or neutral background. There are many online websites that will convert jpegs to color transparencies.
The full provenance (history of ownership) of your work and supporting materials such as exhibitions, literature, auction, or gallery sales is a critical component of your application. An exhaustive effort should be made for your work to provide dates and names of previous owners leading back to the artist.
The Keith Haring Studio, LLC Examination Committee will review complete applications four times a year. All application materials, as outlined in the authentication instructions, must be received together in one envelope by mail.
Contents of your envelope will include:
1. Printed and filled in copy of the 4 page Examination Agreement
2. 4” x 5” Transparency documentation of the work in question
3. Provenance and supporting materials
The Keith Haring Studio LLC does not offer appraisal services.
For Authentication materials or inquiries, please go to our contact page and choose "Authentication" from the "Choose Topic" drop down list when you fill out the form.
